Jay turned 22 today – March 28, 2011. He usually looks angry, and probably for good reason. His Dad left when he was 3 to clean his life up. He knew he couldn’t be a good father when he was a junkie. Jay respects him for that. His mom died of an overdose when he was 11. He graduated from high school and worked two jobs so he could save money to go to school. His uncle had helped him open a bank account and he was living with him at the time. After Jay saved $80,000, his uncle took the money and ran off to Oregon. Jay is now homeless; has been for two years. He is one of the dozens of young people that live in Harvard Square. I took him a small gift today for his birthday – a sleeping bag given by a young lady in our church, a cupcake, a card, and a phone card. I got to sit with him for about an hour and hear his story. It’s hard to put into words what I feel. I just want to see God change his life but honestly I feel quite helpless. Only God can do this. Pray for Jay…and John, and Taven, and Joe, and Crystal. These are a few of the people I know by name that live on the street near my home. Happy birthday Jay.
